More about what we do:
We get involved in many environmental issues that may arise, in our area as well as statewide and nationally.
We are part of a bigger network of Knitting Nannas groups (or "loops"!!) all over Australia. Most of them are based in NSW (21 of them). If you want to learn more about the history of Knitting Nannas, click on "Our Story" (above).
This year, (2025), we have joined rallies against new state laws as well as protests against logging in forests nearby. We are keen to stop new coal and gas projects and some of us will go to Newcastle at the end of the year to join the People's Blockade.
Here are some of the demonstrations we have been involved in:
outside Jacinta Allan’s office to protest against the law to curb the right to protest,
a nationwide rally, in Melbourne against logging native forests,
meetings in Castlemaine, to draw attention to Dutton’s proposal to introduce nuclear energy,
a rally outside Lisa Chester’s office (Federal Labor minister for Bendigo) to protest the new approval of the extension of Woodside’s gas plant in WA and
2 actions to protect Wombat State Forest and to mark the occasion of 4 years of inaction by the State Labor government on stopping logging in Wombat State Forest - one with Wombat Action Group and one with Wombat Forest Care and Extinction Rebellion
At our meetings, we have learnt about issues of interest: logging and Wombat State Forest, the environmental record of the federal government (for the election), divestment and digital activism. We gather research from authoritative sources; everything we do is based on evidence. If you would like to learn more about these issues, read our "Fact Files" (an information sheet handed out at meetings) and other articles under "Our Campaigns". You will find a lot of valuable information there.
It's not all serious! We always have time for a chat and a bit of fun. We have a singing group and we are involved in craft activities.
We get involved in our community and we join other environmental groups. We work closely with the council and Castlemaine Community House. Everyone is welcome to attend; our group is very inclusive and welcoming.
If you would like to know more about these issues, see Our Campaigns:
Logging of native state forests
- the state government was meant to have banned logging in state forests - why is it still taking place?
Divestment
- do you know what your super company and bank is investing in? It might shock you!
The Federal Labor Govt record so far
- they have done some good things (renewable energy) but they have made some terrible decisions too
